What is Coaching
Coaching assists clients to create and accomplish their personal goals,
to overcome obstacles, to discover strengths and passions which
ultimately lead to a happier more productive life.
The best way to describe coaching is to take you thru a case study which is based on a compilation of clients.
Mary, an attractive, bright, college educated woman is 41 years of
age. She came because she was not happy with her life, had some
struggles with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and was not making
enough money in her sales job. In the initial interview, she
described times in her life where she was working passionately and
productively. In college, she lead and organized several
organizations and campaigns and won outstanding student. In her
sales jobs, she would reach goals usually for contests and then return
to spotty performance.
The results of several inventories showed that she has entrepreneurial
abilities, is an outgoing, logical person who works best with
flexibility and adaptability. She values community, achievement, family
happiness, leadership, and has a desire to help society. Her
satisfaction with life survey showed that she was extremely unhappy
with every aspect of her life. On the Optimism/Pessimism scale,
she scored fairly optimistic and hopeful for the future but scored as
low as possible on the self esteem indexes. I did refer her to a
counselor for her family of origin issues.
In our work together, we spent time visualizing what a happy and
successful life would look and feel like. We looked at the
messages she had learned. She had learned that she had to be
perfect but that she was never good enough. On money, she learned
that money was always scarce and one didn't deserve to have it or spend
it. By looking at her life and her talents, she was able to see
how capable she clearly is and how she sabotages herself from making
allot of money. She learned techniques to dispute her failure
thinking and to feel better about herself.
Thru homework and goal setting, she began making more sales
calls. Before, when she got a new client, she would procrastinate
in her effort to make the plan perfect and would lose the client.
She now can proceed without hesitation. We also worked on
organization and time management techniques that fit her ADD
personality. She is now making more money, contributes with her
volunteer work, feels better about herself and reports satisfaction
with her life.
How Long Does Coaching Take?
Many clients reach their goals in 3 months and some may take up to a year.
What Are Some Issues Clients Work On?
They might work on finding the career that fits their personality,
having a thought partner when starting a new business, reentering the
work force after motherhood, job dissatisfaction, help for a college
freshman so they can stay on task and handle to new freedom,
bringing balance to a busy life, improving communication or visioning a
higher purpose in an organization, making more money, learning how you
get in the way of your highest success or dealing with ADD and ADHD issues .
